How To Maintain Clean Drains

by Robert Larson

Plumbing drains tend to clog up at the most inopportune times, such as when you are preparing dinner or when you have guests over. Although you may be unable to stop all clogs, you can take preventative measures to prevent many of them from occurring in the first place. Each type of bathroom and kitchen drain clog are handled differently, but here are a few tips that will help you maintain clean drains throughout your home so water continues to flow smoothly.

Rinse Drains With Hot Water

When you rinse out your drains, you want to make sure that you do so with hot water. Hot water has the capability of breaking down the oils that have found their way down your kitchen drain as well as the toothpaste in your bathroom drain. In doing so, your drains will start to work easier and faster.

Dispose of Waste in More Efficient Ways

There are certain things that just should not be put down your sinks' drains. Unfortunately, many homeowners do it anyway. Try to get into the habit of disposing of waste that clogs your drains in other ways. For instance, you can start saving your grease in a jar, which can be reused or thrown away when it becomes full, or you can simply pour it directly into the garbage can. Coffee grounds can be added to a composting/mulch pile outside. Just get creative, or throw your waste into the trash instead of down the drain.

Install Sink Strainers and Hair Catchers

Although you can be extra careful, it is still possible for pieces of food to get into the sink and fall into the drain. To help prevent this from happening, install a strainer that can catch food and small particles. This strainer will ensure that only water gets into the drain. The strainer can easily be removed to be cleaned. The same can be done in the bathroom to catch hair instead of food.

Clean Your Drains With Baking Soda and Vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar are two of the most versatile cleaners for the home. Not only can they absorb odors, but they can leave your drain fresh and clean. You can use them together or separately. Sprinkle a little baking soda in the drain and use hot water to rinse it out. You can also pour a cup of vinegar in your drain and allow it to sit for about half an hour to an hour and then rinse it with hot water. Alternatively, you can mix a solution of baking soda and vinegar together, but make sure you have a pot of boiling water ready first. You will pour the solution into the drain and allow it to sit for a minute, and then pour the boiling water in the drain.
